When the Electricity Goes Out, What Do You Do?

how to tell if a plant is edible

What do you do if the power goes out? You should first unplug any electrical appliances, such as the water heater, computer and TV. You should also make sure that all smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are working and that the batteries are fully charged. Review your family's emergency plans. Gather alternative charging methods, such as auto, solar, and crank chargers. Last, be sure to test your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. Follow the manufacturer's instructions if you own a generator and learn how to operate it safely.

Unplug appliances

Unplugging expensive electronics can help protect them from power outages. Even if your electronics aren't power-hungry they should still be unplugged if they become sensitive to surges. You can also use surge suppressors to protect your electronic devices. Don't open the fridge! While the power may go back on soon, you shouldn't eat anything.

Unplug the water heater

If your water heater suddenly stops working, unplug from the electric outlet. Although it sounds simple, it could endanger your water heater. Fortunately, there are several simple ways to solve this problem. First, turn off power to the unit. This may be hard to find, but it will help prevent any more damage or danger. To find out more about how to unplug your water heater when electricity goes out, continue reading.

Unplug computers

A common misconception is that unplugging computers if the electricity goes off will make them work more efficiently. It is not true that unplugging your laptop will save energy. It does however protect your computer against power surges. These can cause serious damage. Before attempting to unplug your computer when the electricity goes out, turn off your surge suppressor and unplug all electronics.

Unplug TV

Don't watch TV if your electricity goes off. That's a big mistake you can make. While there are many reasons to leave your TV on at night, there are times when it is safer to unplug your television. Modern electrical circuit boards have protection devices that automatically trip the electricity if there is danger. You can also inspect the fuses within your TV plug to verify that they are still in good condition.

Air conditioners can be unplugged

If the power outage does not last for long, unplug your AC unit. If the AC unit is left plugged in, it can cause damage. The capacitor, which regulates the motor's power, can only handle a certain amount of power and will burn out if the circuit breaker is tripped. Overloading your capacitor can cause system malfunctions. Protecting your electrical system against a surge by unplugging it before the power goes out is another way to protect it.
